The travels of Pedro de Cieza de Léon, A.D. 1532-50,
contained in the first part of his Chronicle of Peru
Pedro de Cieza de León sailed for the Indies as a boy and spent seventeen years as a soldier in Colombia and Peru before returning to Spain to publish, in 1553, the first part of his Chronicle of Peru, the only part printed in his lifetime. It is a geographical and ethnographic description of the land from Panama to the southern Andes, town by town and valley by valley, recording the peoples, their customs and religions, the Inca roads, bridges and storehouses, Cuzco and its temple, the llama, the coca leaf and the Spanish settlements. Clements Markham's translation, published by the Hakluyt Society in 1864, carries his introduction on the author and his sources.
