The Tales of the Heptameron, Vol. 1 (of 5)
The Heptameron, left unfinished at her death in 1549, is the collection of tales by Marguerite, queen of Navarre and sister of Francis I of France. Modeled on Boccaccio's Decameron, it brings together a group of travelers held up by floods at an abbey in the Pyrenees, who pass the days by telling true stories and debating what they mean. This first volume of the English translation by George Saintsbury, published in 1894, contains essays on Marguerite and on the Heptameron, the prologue and the tales of the first day, stories of love, deceit, violence and virtue. Frank, witty and morally searching, the tales offer a vivid picture of French society in the Renaissance. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
