The Swiss Family Robinson

by Johann David Wyss

Translated by Mary Jane Godwin and William GodwinAbout 11 h 21 min of reading41 chapters

A Swiss pastor, his wife and their four sons are the only survivors of a ship bound for the East Indies, wrecked within sight of an uninhabited tropical coast. Over the years that follow they build a house in a giant tree, domesticate everything from a buffalo to an ostrich, and turn the island into a well-ordered farm, with the father using every incident as a lesson in natural history, craft and piety. Johann David Wyss wrote the story for his own children and his son published it in 1812. It appears here in the English version by William Godwin and Mary Jane Godwin, which introduced the book to British readers and shaped every later adaptation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
