About 8 h 36 min of reading37 chapters

Thomas Okey, a Spitalfields basket-maker who became Cambridge's first professor of Italian, wrote The Story of Paris for the Mediaeval Towns series, first published in 1906 and reprinted here in the 1919 edition with illustrations by Katherine Kimball. The first part tells the story of the city from Roman Lutetia through the Capetian kings, the university, the wars of religion, the Bourbons, the Revolution and the Second Empire to Okey's own day. The second part is a guide to the city as it stands, section by section, from the Île de la Cité and Notre Dame to the Louvre, the Latin Quarter and the great churches and museums, with the history of each building and quarter. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
