The Story of an African Farm, published in 1883 under the pen name Ralph Iron, is the first novel of Olive Schreiner. On a lonely farm in the Karoo of South Africa, three children grow up under the rule of the Boer widow Tant Sannie: the dreamy Waldo, son of the kindly German overseer, the gentle Em and her cousin Lyndall, clever and rebellious. A grotesque impostor, Bonaparte Blenkins, briefly takes over the farm, and later the children go out into the world. Schreiner writes about religious doubt, the limits imposed on women and the search for meaning with a frankness that startled Victorian readers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
