The Steam Engine Explained and Illustrated (Seventh Edition)
With an Account of Its Invention and Progressive Improvement, and Its Application to Navigation and Railways; Including Also a Memoir of Watt
Dionysius Lardner, an Irish scientific writer and popularizer, first published The Steam Engine Explained and Illustrated in the 1820s, and this seventh edition appeared in London in 1840, illustrated with wood engravings and dedicated to Lord Brougham. Lardner explains the physics of heat and steam for general readers, then tells the history of the engine from its early forms through Newcomen's atmospheric engine and the improvements of James Watt, whose memoir is included, to the high-pressure engines of his own day. Later chapters describe the application of steam to navigation and to railways, then still a new invention. It is a vivid record of early Victorian enthusiasm for technology.
