The School and Society

by John Dewey

Being three lectures

About 1 h 30 min of reading7 chapters

The School and Society grew out of three lectures John Dewey gave in 1899 to parents and supporters of the University Elementary School in Chicago, the experimental school he directed at the University of Chicago. Dewey argues that the industrial revolution has emptied the home of the shared work through which children once learned, and that the school must take up that role by becoming an embryonic community built around active occupations such as cooking, carpentry and weaving. The lectures address social progress, the life of the child and the waste caused by separating school from life, and a closing account describes the school's first three years. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
