How We Think
How We Think, published in 1910, is John Dewey's attempt to explain to teachers what thinking actually is and how it can be trained. He defines reflective thought as the careful examination of a belief in the light of the grounds that support it, and he traces its natural course: a felt difficulty, a definition of the problem, suggested solutions, reasoning out their consequences, and testing. Dewey insists that children already think in this way whenever they are genuinely curious, and that schools too often replace curiosity with routine. Later chapters discuss language, observation, the role of play and work, and the proper use of lectures and recitation. The book remains a foundation of progressive education. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
