Reconstruction in Philosophy

by John Dewey

About 3 h 22 min of reading12 chapters

Reconstruction in Philosophy, published in 1920, began as lectures that John Dewey gave at the Imperial University in Tokyo. In eight chapters he argues that traditional philosophy, from the Greeks onward, sought fixed and eternal truths because it reflected a society that separated knowing from doing, and that modern science and industry call for a different approach. Philosophy should become an instrument for solving human problems, treating ideas as hypotheses to be tested in experience. Dewey applies this view to the relation between reason and experience, to conceptions of nature and knowledge, to moral theory and to social philosophy. It is one of the clearest introductions to his pragmatism. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
