The public and its problems

by John Dewey

About 3 h 38 min of reading7 chapters

The Public and Its Problems, published in 1927, grew out of lectures John Dewey gave at Kenyon College in January 1926, and it is his main work of political philosophy. Writing against Walter Lippmann's view that the public is a phantom and that government should be left to experts, Dewey asks what a public is, how it comes into being around the indirect consequences of human action, and why the machine age has produced an eclipse of the public rather than its enlargement. The later chapters search for what he calls the Great Community, a democracy made real through free inquiry, communication and the growth of local life. It remains central to debates about democracy and expertise. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
