Ethics
Ethics, published in 1908 by John Dewey of Columbia University and James H. Tufts of the University of Chicago, is a college textbook that became a standard statement of pragmatist moral philosophy. Its first part traces the beginnings and growth of morality, from the customs of kinship groups through the Hebrews, Greeks and modern societies. The second examines the theory of the moral life, testing utilitarian, Kantian and other accounts against a view of conduct as intelligent choice in changing situations. The third, the world of action, applies these ideas to the questions of the day: the state, economic justice, business, labor, property and the family. The authors aim to make moral problems feel real. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
