Human Nature and Conduct: An introduction to social psychology

by John Dewey

About 5 h 37 min of reading32 chapters

Human Nature and Conduct, published in 1922, grew out of lectures John Dewey gave at Stanford. In it he argues that morals cannot be understood apart from the habits, impulses and intelligence through which people actually act. Habit is social before it is personal; impulse is the raw material that habit shapes; intelligence is the capacity to reconstruct habits when they fail. From this starting point Dewey criticizes the separation of means from ends, the appeal to fixed ideals, and the notion of a will standing outside its circumstances, and he treats ethics as a matter of learning from consequences. The book is written for general readers rather than specialists, and it remains one of his clearest statements. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
