Leibniz's New Essays Concerning the Human Understanding: A Critical Exposition

by John Dewey

About 4 h 33 min of reading13 chapters

John Dewey wrote this study in 1888, early in his career, for a series of German philosophical classics for English readers edited by his teacher George S. Morris. Leibniz composed his New Essays as a dialogue answering Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, but held them back after Locke's death. Dewey introduces the man and the sources of his thought, then follows the argument point by point: innate ideas against the blank slate, sensation and experience, the will, matter and spirit, the reality of the material world, the nature and extent of knowledge and Leibniz's theology. The book shows the young Dewey still under the influence of Hegel. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
