The San Rosario Ranch, published in 1884, is the first novel of Maud Howe, later Maud Howe Elliott. A young woman brought up in Italy comes to live with relatives on a ranch in the California hills and finds herself between two very different men, a painter and a man of the land, in a country where the social rules she has learned do not apply. Howe, the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, had traveled in California and writes its light, its oaks and its mixed society of ranchers, Chinese servants and visiting easterners with evident pleasure. The novel is a romance of the gentler kind, more interested in talk and landscape than in incident. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
