The Romantic Composers
The Romantic Composers, published in 1906 by the American critic and composer Daniel Gregory Mason, is a set of essays for the general listener on the generation that followed Beethoven. An introduction defines romanticism in music, its preference for feeling over form and its invention of the short lyrical piece and the program symphony. Six chapters then treat Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Berlioz and Liszt, each combining a biographical sketch with an account of the composer's characteristic works and temperament, generous in quotation from letters and contemporaries and frank in its judgments of where each man's gifts gave out. Mason wrote companion volumes on Beethoven and his forerunners and on later composers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
