The Roman History of Ammianus Marcellinus
During the Reigns of the Emperors Constantius, Julian, Jovianus, Valentinian, and Valens
The Roman History of Ammianus Marcellinus, in the translation of C. D. Yonge published in 1862, gives the surviving portion of the last great Latin history of the empire. Ammianus, a Greek-speaking officer from Antioch, wrote a continuation of Tacitus from Nerva to 378; the first thirteen books are lost, and Books XIV to XXXI cover the years 353 to 378, which he lived through and partly witnessed. Here are the cruelty of Gallus, the rise of Julian in Gaul and his Persian campaign and death, the brief reign of Jovian, Valentinian and Valens, the siege of Amida where Ammianus himself fought, the coming of the Huns and Goths, and the disaster of Adrianople with which the work ends.
