The Roman assemblies from their origin to the end of the Republic
The Roman Assemblies from Their Origin to the End of the Republic, published in 1909, is George Willis Botsford's study of the popular assemblies through which the Roman people legislated, elected magistrates and judged capital cases. The first part examines the elements of the system: the populus and its primitive tribes, the curiae, the thirty-five tribes, the centuries and classes of the Servian army, and the auspices that governed public business. The second part treats each assembly in turn, the curiate, centuriate and tribal comitia and the plebeian concilium, their organization and procedure, and reviews the laws and trials they produced down to the fall of the Republic. Botsford, a Columbia professor, wrote the book for scholars, and it remains a standard reference. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
