The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, Volume 1

by Jefferson Davis

About 19 h 23 min of reading65 chapters

Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederate States, published The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government in two volumes in 1881. As his preface states, the work sets out to prove that the Southern states had a constitutional right to secede and that the war waged against them was unlawful. This first volume reviews the constitutional history of the Union, the sectional disputes of the decades before the war, the secession of the Southern states and the formation of the Confederate government, and the opening of the war through Fort Sumter and the first campaigns. It is a self-justifying work that minimizes slavery as a cause of the conflict, and it became a founding text of the Lost Cause. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
