The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of 1830
The Red and the Black, published in 1830, follows Julien Sorel, a sawmill owner's son from a small town in the Franche-Comté who has learned Latin and memorized the New Testament, and who sees in the Church the only career open to an ambitious young man after Napoleon. He becomes tutor to the children of the mayor, Monsieur de Rênal, and the lover of the mayor's wife; passes through the seminary at Besançon; and goes on to Paris as secretary to the Marquis de la Mole, whose daughter Mathilde he sets out to conquer. Stendhal watches his hero's calculations and self-deceptions with irony and sympathy. The translation is by Horace Barnett Samuel.
