The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is Robert Tressell's novel of the lives of house painters and decorators in Mugsborough, a small town on the south coast of England, published after his death in 1911. Over a little more than a year, Tressell follows a group of workmen employed by the firm of Rushton and Company through scamped jobs, low wages, unemployment and the fear of the workhouse. Among them is Frank Owen, a skilled craftsman and socialist who tries, with mixed success, to persuade his fellow workers that they are the real philanthropists, giving their labor so that others may profit. The novel combines bitter comedy, careful observation of work and long political argument. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
