The Races of Man: An Outline of Anthropology and Ethnography

by Joseph Deniker

About 11 h 57 min of reading39 chapters

The Races of Man, published in 1900 in the Contemporary Science Series edited by Havelock Ellis, is Joseph Deniker's compact survey of physical and cultural anthropology as understood at the end of the nineteenth century. The first half describes the somatic characters by which human groups were then measured and compared, their physiological and psychological traits, language, material life, religion, family and society; the second surveys the peoples of Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and America, past and present, with Deniker's own classification of the European populations into a number of races and sub-races. The book has 176 illustrations and two maps. It is a document of racial science before its assumptions were discredited, and should be read as such. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
