The Promised Land

by Mary Antin

About 7 h 40 min of reading28 chapters

The Promised Land, published in 1912 after serialization in the Atlantic Monthly, is Mary Antin's account of her passage from the Jewish Pale of Settlement to Boston. The first half describes her childhood in Polotsk, the restrictions and fears under which Jews lived, her father's failures and his emigration in 1891. The second half begins with the family's own voyage three years later and follows a girl of thirteen who had never been to school through the public schools of Chelsea and Boston to the Latin School, writing poems in a new language while her family struggled in the slums of Dover Street. Antin's argument that America remade her gave the book its title and its fame. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
