The Prairie Wife
A young American woman who has lived among yachts, Riviera hotels and titled suitors loses her fortune in a Chilean revolution and marries, almost on impulse, a Scottish-Canadian wheat farmer she calls Dinky-Dunk. She follows him to a homestead shack on the Alberta prairie and writes to her friend Matilda Anne about everything: the cold, the loneliness, the work, the neighbors, the first crop, the first child, and the slow discovery of what she is made of. Arthur Stringer published the novel in 1915, the first of a trilogy, and its diary form gives it an unusually frank and funny voice for its time. Stringer had farmed in Alberta himself. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
