The Prairie Traveler: A Hand-book for Overland Expeditions
The Prairie Traveler, published in 1859 by authority of the War Department, is Randolph B. Marcy's handbook for parties crossing the plains and mountains to California, Oregon and the Southwest. A captain with long frontier service, Marcy explains how to organize a company, how to choose between mules and oxen, what provisions and arms to carry, how to march, find and purify water, corral wagons against stampedes, ford rivers and quicksand, pack a mule in the Mexican manner, treat saddle sores and snakebite, make fires, jerk meat, trail and fight Indians and hunt buffalo, deer, antelope and bear. The second half gives itineraries of the principal routes to the Pacific, with distances, water and grass noted camp by camp.
