Frederic Seebohm's The Oxford Reformers, first published in 1867, tells the story of three friends who hoped to renew Christianity through learning before Luther's break with Rome. John Colet, returning from Italy, lectured at Oxford on the epistles of Paul in a new way, reading them as living letters rather than as quarries for doctrine. The young Erasmus came under his influence, and Thomas More joined them. Seebohm follows their fellow-work through Colet's school at St Paul's, Erasmus's Greek New Testament and More's Utopia, to the moment when events overtook them. He quotes their letters generously, and the book is as much about friendship as about ideas. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
