The Origin of Metallic Currency and Weight Standards
William Ridgeway, professor of Greek at Cork and later Disney Professor of Archaeology at Cambridge, published The Origin of Metallic Currency and Weight Standards in 1892. Against the received doctrine that the weight systems of the ancient world descended from Babylonian science, he argued that money began with the ox as the unit of value, that the first weighing was of gold, and that the gold unit everywhere represented the value of a cow, from which the Homeric talent and the later coin standards of Greece, Italy and the East derived. The chapters range over primitive currencies, the distribution of gold, trade routes, the weight systems of China and the origin of coinage, with appendices on Roman and Celtic units. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
