About 8 h 21 min of reading112 chapters

Thomas Morton was an English lawyer and trader who settled at Mount Wollaston, south of Boston, in the 1620s, set up a maypole, sold guns to the Indians and traded in furs, and was twice expelled by his Puritan neighbors. New English Canaan, published in Amsterdam in 1637, is his revenge. The first book describes the native peoples of New England with unusual sympathy, the second the country's natural riches, and the third satirizes the Plymouth and Massachusetts colonists as narrow, greedy hypocrites, under mock-heroic names. This 1883 edition of the Prince Society adds Charles Francis Adams's long introduction on Morton's life and the dispute over Merry Mount, with extensive notes. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
