The Medals of Creation, Volumes 1 and 2

by Gideon Algernon Mantell

First Lessons in Geology and the Study of Organic Remains

About 17 h 27 min of reading56 chapters

Gideon Mantell, the Sussex surgeon who discovered and named the Iguanodon, wrote The Medals of Creation in 1844 as a popular introduction to geology and fossils, and this is the enlarged second edition of 1854, both volumes complete. The title compares fossils to the medals by which historians read the past. Mantell explains how rocks are formed and dated, then surveys the organic remains of each great class, fossil plants, corals, shells, crustaceans, insects, fishes, reptiles, including his own dinosaurs and the marine lizards of Lyme Regis, birds and mammals, with instructions on collecting specimens and a series of excursions to places such as the Isle of Wight, Tilgate Forest, and the London clay of Sheppey. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
