The loyalists of America and their times

by Egerton Ryerson

About 15 h 18 min of reading82 chapters

Egerton Ryerson, the Methodist minister who shaped public schooling in Upper Canada and was himself the son of a Loyalist, published The Loyalists of America and Their Times in 1880. He set out to tell the story of the colonists who stayed faithful to the Crown, a story he believed had been written only by their enemies. The narrative reaches back to the Puritan settlements of the seventeenth century, traces the quarrels that led to the Revolution, and follows the Loyalists through the war, the confiscations and the exile that brought many of them to Canada, ending with the War of 1812. It is a partisan history, frank about its sympathies and rich in documents. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
