The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767, is a novel in which the hero is not born until the third volume and the author never gets much past his infancy. Tristram sets out to tell his life and is forever interrupted by digressions, his father Walter's theories about names and noses, his Uncle Toby's hobby-horse of fortifications and his courtship of the Widow Wadman, the sermons of Parson Yorick and the misadventures of Dr. Slop. Sterne plays with typography, blank and black pages, and the reader's expectations, and the result is at once a parody of the novel and one of the most affectionate books in the language. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
