The Life & Letters of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky

by Modest Chaikovskii

Translated by Rosa NewmarchAbout 17 h 21 min of reading99 chapters

Modest Tchaikovsky, the composer's younger brother and closest confidant, wrote the first full biography of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky soon after his death in 1893, building it around the composer's own letters and diaries. This English version, edited and abridged by Rosa Newmarch and published in 1906, follows Tchaikovsky from his childhood and years as a clerk in the Ministry of Justice through the conservatories of St. Petersburg and Moscow, his disastrous marriage, his long correspondence with his patron Nadezhda von Meck, and his growing fame across Europe and America. Through the letters Tchaikovsky speaks of his work, doubts and friendships in his own voice. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
