The Letters of Cassiodorus, published in 1886, is Thomas Hodgkin's condensed translation of the Variae, the twelve books of official correspondence that Cassiodorus, a Roman senator in the service of the Ostrogothic kings, collected around 537. Most of the letters were written in the name of Theodoric and his successors, Athalaric, Amalasuentha, Theodahad and Witigis, to senators, bishops, provincial governors and foreign rulers, and they show the Gothic kingdom of Italy at work: grain supplies, aqueducts, taxes, the games, the protection of Jews and the repair of Rome. Two books of formulae give the standard letters of appointment to each office. Hodgkin prefaces the abstract with a life of Cassiodorus and chapters on the offices of the late empire. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
