The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights

by Sir James Knowles

About 6 h 11 min of reading17 chapters

The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights is a retelling of Malory for young readers by James Knowles, the architect and editor who later founded the Nineteenth Century review; it first appeared in 1862 and is here in its eighth edition. In fourteen chapters Knowles follows the whole cycle: the birth of Arthur and the sword in the stone, the founding of the Round Table, the adventures of Gawain, Lancelot, Tristram and Geraint, the quest of the Holy Grail, the love of Lancelot and Guinevere, the treason of Mordred and the last battle. The prose keeps something of Malory's cadence while smoothing his difficulties, and the book was dedicated to Tennyson, whose Idylls were then appearing. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
