The Land of Thor

by J. Ross Browne

About 10 h 40 min of reading54 chapters

The Land of Thor, published in 1867 with the author's own illustrations, is J. Ross Browne's humorous account of a journey through Russia, Scandinavia and Iceland. He begins in St. Petersburg and Moscow, describing markets, tea-drinking, the Kremlin and the debates over serfdom and reform, then crosses to Reval, Helsingfors and Finland, Stockholm and the Gotha Canal, and travels into Norway, where he records local manners, a horse trader and a visit to Hans Christian Andersen. The last part takes him by way of the Faroe Islands to Iceland, Reykjavik, Thingvellir and the Geysers, in the company of a guide and some unlucky English sportsmen. Browne writes as a cheerful, skeptical American observer. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
