The Journals of Lewis and Clark, 1804-1806
In May 1804 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led a small party up the Missouri River from St. Louis under orders from Thomas Jefferson to find a route to the Pacific. The journals they kept over the next twenty-eight months record the expedition day by day: the winter among the Mandan, the hiring of the Shoshone interpreter Sacagawea, the crossing of the Bitterroots on the edge of starvation, the Columbia, the rain-soaked winter at Fort Clatsop and the return. This edition reproduces the entries with their original spelling intact, Clark's in particular being highly inventive. It is a very long document, closer to a working logbook than a narrative, and all the more vivid for it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first entries free.
