The History of Tammany Hall, published in 1901 and here in the enlarged second edition of 1917, is Gustavus Myers's account of the Democratic machine that governed New York City for most of a century. Myers, a muckraking historian who later wrote the History of the Great American Fortunes, traces the Society of St. Tammany from a patriotic club of 1789 through Aaron Burr's capture of it, the suffrage contests, the Jacksonian years and the rise of the gangs, to the Tweed Ring and its collapse, and then through the successive dictatorships of John Kelly, Richard Croker and Charles F. Murphy, the era of honest graft and the impeachment of Governor Sulzer. The sources are court records, legislative inquiries and newspapers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
