The History of Rome (Volumes 1-5)

by Theodor Mommsen

Translated by William P. DicksonAbout 58 h 33 min of reading94 chapters

Theodor Mommsen's History of Rome, published in German in the 1850s, is a monumental account of the Roman Republic, and this compilation brings together the five volumes of the English translation by William Purdie Dickson. Book One covers early Italy and the regal period, Book Two runs from the end of the monarchy to the union of Italy, and Book Three to the conquest of Carthage and the Greek states. Book Four treats the revolution of the Gracchi, Marius and Sulla, and Book Five the establishment of military monarchy under Pompey and Caesar. Mommsen writes with vigor and strong opinions, comparing ancient politicians to modern ones, and his work later contributed to his Nobel Prize in Literature. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
