About 7 h 34 min of reading29 chapters

John R. Spears, an American journalist and maritime historian, published The History of Our Navy in four volumes in 1897, and this last volume is devoted mainly to the Civil War at sea. After describing the state of the navy in 1859 and the development of steam warships, Spears follows the blockade of the Southern ports, the loss of the Norfolk navy yard, Confederate privateers, the capture of Hatteras Inlet and Port Royal, the Trent affair, Farragut's campaigns, the operations at Charleston and the capture of Fort Fisher, and he closes with the story of the new steel navy of his own time. Lively, opinionated and well illustrated, it is popular naval history in the best sense. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
