The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave
The History of Mary Prince, published in London in 1831, was the first account of a Black woman's life in slavery to appear in Britain. Born in Bermuda, Prince was sold away from her mother as a child, worked in the salt ponds of the Turks Islands, was beaten and abused by a series of owners, and was finally taken to England by the Wood family of Antigua, where she walked out of their house and sought help from the Anti-Slavery Society. She dictated her story to Susanna Strickland; the editor Thomas Pringle added a supplement defending its truth. Plain, angry and precise, the narrative was read in the final push toward abolition in the British colonies. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
