The History of Java, v. 1-2
Thomas Stamford Raffles governed Java for the British from 1811 to 1816, and his History of Java, first published in 1817 and here in the two-volume second edition of 1830, is the record of what he learned there. It describes the island's geography and climate, its people and their character, agriculture, manufactures and trade, language and literature, religion, law and government, then recounts the history of the Javanese kingdoms, the coming of Islam and the Dutch, down to the British occupation. The antiquities chapter was among the first to describe Borobudur and Prambanan. Extensive appendices print proclamations, revenue instructions, vocabularies and tables of weights and measures. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
