This third volume of Evelyn Abbott's 1879 translation of Max Duncker's History of Antiquity is devoted mainly to the height and fall of the Assyrian empire. Duncker follows the campaigns of Tiglath-Pileser, the reigns of Sargon and Sennacherib, the invasion of Syria and Judah, Esarhaddon and the wars of Assurbanipal, and describes the Assyrian constitution, army and art. Alongside this he treats the prophets of Israel, the Egyptian pharaohs of Tanis, Bubastis and Napata, the first collision between Assyria and Egypt, Judah under Manasseh and Josiah, and the northern peoples on the empire's edge. Writing from the inscriptions then newly deciphered and from the Hebrew scriptures, Duncker offers a broad political narrative of the ancient Near East. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
