The Hawk of Egypt
The Hawk of Egypt, published in 1922, is a desert romance in the manner that E. M. Hull's The Sheik had made fashionable. Damaris, a red-haired English girl traveling in Egypt with her bulldog and a careless chaperone, is first seen in the silk market of Cairo at the hour of prayer, and the novel follows her into the desert and into the power of a chieftain of mixed English and Arab blood, known as the Hawk, whose own divided inheritance is the real subject of the book. Joan Conquest, author of Desert Love, writes with heat and much description of bazaars, tents and sunsets, and her epigraph from Swinburne sets the fatalistic tone. All names, the author notes, are fictitious. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
