The Goose Man
The Goose Man is Jakob Wassermann's novel of a composer's life, published in German as Das Gaensemaennchen in 1915 and named after the bronze fountain figure in Nuremberg. Daniel Nothafft, born in a Franconian town, pursues music against his family's wishes and arrives in Nuremberg poor, arrogant and sure of his gift. The book follows his marriage into the household of Inspector Jordan, his love for the two sisters Gertrude and Eleanore, the destructive servant Philippina, and the long labor of a symphony, through a provincial world of officials, musicians and gossips. The first chapter and part of the second were translated by Ludwig Lewisohn; the rest of the English text is the work of Allen W. Porterfield. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
