The Glaciers of the Alps, first published in 1860 and dedicated to Michael Faraday, is John Tyndall's account of the expeditions he made to study how glaciers move. The first part is narrative: excursions in the Bernese Oberland and the Tyrol, long weeks on the Mer de Glace at Chamonix, and ascents of Mont Blanc, the Finsteraarhorn and Monte Rosa, described with a climber's pleasure in danger and scenery. The second part is scientific, explaining glacier motion, ice, crevasses, moraines and the physical principles behind them. The book helped make Tyndall a pioneer of both alpine climbing and popular science. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
