The Generall Historie of Virginia, New England and the Summer Isles, published in 1624, is Captain John Smith's account of the first English colonies in America, printed here in a 1907 edition with the original spelling. This first volume contains the first five of its six books: the earlier voyages to Virginia under Raleigh, Grenville and White; a description of the country, its plants, animals and native peoples, their religion and government; the history of the Jamestown colony from 1606, including Smith's own captivity among the Powhatan and the famine years; the colony's fortunes after his departure; and the history of Bermuda. Smith is a partisan of his own achievements, but the book is a primary source for early America. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
