The Frontier in American History, published in 1920, collects the essays in which the historian Frederick Jackson Turner developed one of the most influential ideas in American historiography. In the opening piece, first read in 1893, he argues that the existence of free land and the steady westward advance of settlement explain American democracy, individualism and national character more than any inheritance from Europe. The later essays apply the thesis to the Old West, the Ohio valley, the Middle West and the Mississippi valley, to sectionalism and to the problems of a nation whose frontier had closed. Later historians have qualified much of it, but the frontier thesis still sets the terms of debate about what made the United States distinctive.
