The Foundation of the Ottoman Empire; a history of the Osmanlis up to the death of Bayezid I (1300-1403)

Herbert Adams Gibbons, an American historian and journalist who had taught at Robert College in Constantinople, published The Foundation of the Ottoman Empire in 1916. It follows the Osmanlis from the obscure frontier principality of Osman around 1300 through the reigns of Orkhan and Murad, who carried the state into Europe, to Bayezid I, whose empire collapsed after his defeat by Timur at Ankara and who died a captive in 1403. Gibbons argues a provocative thesis: that the Ottomans were a new people, formed largely from converted Greeks and Balkan Christians rather than from Asian Turks. Maps and chronological tables accompany the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
