The Federalist Papers are the eighty-five essays that Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay published in New York newspapers in 1787 and 1788, under the shared name Publius, to persuade the state to ratify the proposed Constitution. They explain and defend the new design piece by piece: why a union is better than thirteen separate republics, how a large republic can control faction, how power is divided between the states and the federal government and among the three branches, and why an independent judiciary and an energetic executive are necessary. Written in haste for a political fight, they became the most consulted commentary on American government ever produced.
