The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault
The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault gathers the stories the French courtier published in 1697 that became the common property of European childhood: Little Red Riding-Hood, Blue Beard, The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, Puss in Boots, Cinderilla, Riquet with the Tuft and Little Thumb, together with the verse tales The Ridiculous Wishes and Donkey-skin, each followed by its rhymed moral. The translations are those of Robert Samber, who first put Perrault into English in 1729, and J. E. Mansion. This edition, first published in 1922 with an introduction by Thomas Bodkin on Perrault's life, keeps the ironic, worldly tone of the originals, which were written as much for grown-ups as for children. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
