The Evolution of Modern Capitalism: A Study of Machine Production
The Evolution of Modern Capitalism, first published by J. A. Hobson in 1894 and revised several times afterward, is a history and analysis of industry since the introduction of machinery. Hobson traces the growth of the factory system and the structure of modern industry, the rise of large firms, combinations and trusts, the role of finance, the fluctuations of trade and his own theory that under-consumption and over-saving cause depressions, the position of women workers, the effect of machines on the skill and life of the workman, and the growth of cities. He closes with the question of what civilization gains from the machine. Hobson's heterodox economics later influenced Keynes.
